Ingredients

Bratwurst and Onions
  • 4 links bratwurst preferably uncooked
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for cooking
  • 2 large onions sliced
  • 1 cup beer lager or ale
  • 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder optional
Serving
  • 4 buns brat buns for serving
  • 1 cup mustard for serving
  • 1 cup sauerkraut for serving

Method

Caramelize the Onions
  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 20 minutes.

  1. In the same skillet, add bratwurst and brown on all sides, about 5-7 minutes.
Braised in Beer
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Transfer the browned bratwurst to an oven-safe baking dish. Pour beer over the brats and add the caramelized onions on top.
  3. Cover with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
Serve
  1. Remove from the oven and serve the brats in buns, topped with additional caramelized onions, mustard, and sauerkraut.
